1990: Newhart closes the inn
Bob Newhart, known for his successful sitcom “The Bob Newhart Show” in the 1970s, returned with another hit series, “Newhart.”
In this show, he portrayed the deadpan comic as the owner of a Vermont inn, where he interacted with a cast of eccentric locals.
The series ran for eight seasons, comprising 184 episodes on CBS.
It culminated with one of the most iconic finales in television history.
In the final moments of the last episode, Newhart’s character, Dick Loudon, is comically struck by a golf ball.
Then, in a surprising twist, the screen fades to black. Suddenly, Dr. Bob Hartley, his character from “The Bob Newhart Show,” wakes up in bed.
He shares with his wife (Suzanne Pleshette, reprising her role from the earlier series) that the entire storyline of “Newhart” was nothing more than a dream. -A.D.
