This Was Television On June 12

1965: Salvatore Bono and Cherilyn Sarkisian make their first TV appearance
on American Bandstand, under the better-known name Sonny and Cher. The duo enjoyed sporadic musical success for the next decade before becoming comedy and variety show mainstays in the 1970s. A guest-hosting stint on The Merv Griffin Show in 1971 led to the launch of The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour on CBS later that year, a show which would run until 1977.
After parting ways, Sonny and Cher would go on to greater achievements as a congressman and an Oscar winner—among popular 1970s duos, a feat equaled only by B.J. and The Bear. -A.D.
