1948: TV Guide is born
Beginning life as a local New York publication called The TeleVision Guide, the first issue to hit NYC newsstands covered the week of June 14–20, 1948. In April 1953, it morphed into the familiar national edition.
For decades, TV Guide was a mainstay of American coffee tables, before being largely supplanted in the late 90s and early ‘00s by on-screen channel listings—a technology which the periodical has resoundingly “jeered” for more than 480 consecutive issues. -A.D.
