This Was Television On June 15

1969: Hee Haw premieres on CBS
where it aired for just two seasons—before knocking out another 20 in syndication, becoming one of the longest-running programs in TV history. Known for its unabashedly corny, rural-themed sketch comedy, Hee Haw was also one of the most prominent national stages for country and bluegrass artists during the 1970s and 1980s.
Today, Hee Haw may be best known to younger viewers for the Conway Twitty performances inserted as cutaway gags in several episodes of Family Guy, a vital legacy in that it provides an occasional four-minute respite from watching Family Guy. –A.D.
Today’s Birthdays: Jim Belushi, star of more than three times as many sitcom episodes as Arrested Development aired (58); Courteney Cox, Springsteen dance partner (48); Neil Patrick Harris, legen—wait for it—dary (39); Helen Hunt, secretly madder about Greg Evigan (49).
