1969: Apollo 11 launches
The fifth manned mission of NASA’s Apollo program lifted off from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Time. The flight carried Neil Armstrong, Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin, and Michael Collins on a voyage that would culminate in the historic moon landing four days later. Jack King, NASA’s Chief of Public Information, provided commentary to audiences watching the launch on television. -A.D.
