1948: Candid Camera comes to TV

Spun off from the radio and film series Candid Microphone, the genial collection of practical jokes began a small-screen run that would last, off and on, for nearly six decades. Created, and primarily hosted, by Alan Funt, the hidden camera comedy produced over 1,000 episodes as either a regular series or recurring special.

Candid Camera paved the way for the shenanigans of TV’s Bloopers and Practical JokesPunk’d, and the short-lived Macneil/Lehrer WackyTimePrankHour-A.D.

Today’s Birthdays: Rosanna Arquette, L-Worder (53); Claudia Christian, Babylon 5 commander (47); Joanna García, Midnight Society member (33); Angie Harmon, Rizzoli…or Isles, we’re not sure (40); Justin Theroux, Pawnee visitor (41).
