1950: Gracie says goodnight
The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show, starring the eponymous husband-and-wife comedy duo, debuted on CBS. Burns and Allen were established entertainers known for Vaudeville, radio, and films before launching their half-hour TV showcase, which ran for eight years. Much of their dynamic presented Burns as the straight man and Allen as a ditzy caricature, as exemplified in their signature sign-off in which he would offer, “Say goodnight, Gracie,” to which she would reply, “Goodnight, Gracie.” -A.D.
