1975: Carlton Fisk waves it fair

In Game 6 of the World Series, Fisk’s Boston Red Sox trailed the powerhouse Cincinnati Reds three games to two. With the game tied in the bottom of the 12th inning, Fisk hit a line drive home run that just cleared the left field foul pole—with Fisk hopping down the first base line, willing the ball to stay fair with as much body language as he could muster. Although the Sox went on to lose the series in Game 7, Fisk’s walk-off heroics became one of the most celebrated images in the history of televised sports. -A.D.
