The BBC airs the first episode of Doctor Who, starring William Hartnell as the first incarnation of the eponymous time traveler. Quickly becoming an iconic hit in the UK, the series blended historical and sci-fi elements with a family-friendly tone. Its original run lasted until 1989, and in 2005 it was revived in its current incarnation. To date the show has comprised nearly 800 episodes and 11 Doctors. -A.D.
