1959: The first telecast of the Grammys
The Grammy Awards were first presented by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences on May 4, 1959, honoring the popular music of the prior year, 1958. Six months later that ceremony aired on NBC as part of its regular series Sunday Showcase. These taped broadcasts would be the norm for the Grammy Awards until 1971, when ABC broadcast the ceremony live for the first time. -A.D
