2005: Monday Night Football ends its network run
The iconic program brought the National Football League to primetime and helped football become America’s most popular spectator sport, but by the early 2000s its ratings were flagging. After 35 seasons, ABC broadcast its final installment of Monday Night Football, in which the New England Patriots defeated the New York Jets 31–21 (the same final score which was tallied by the Jets and the Cleveland Browns in MNF‘s first broadcast in 1970). Beginning with the 2005-06 season, Monday Night Football has aired on ABC’s sister cable channel, ESPN. -A.D.
