1962: Jackie Kennedy leads a White House tour

An estimated 46 million viewers—three quarters of the evening’s television audience—tuned into “A Tour of the White House with Mrs. John F. Kennedy.” The special followed First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy and CBS reporter Charles Collingwood through a tour of the presidential residence, detailing her ongoing efforts to redecorate it. The commercial-free program was aired simultaneously on both CBS and NBC; ABC, which had initially declined to air it, reran the show the following week. -A.D.
