2013: Switched at Birth spotlights ASL

For the first time, a scripted primetime program presented an episode almost entirely in American Sign Language. Switched at Birth, a family drama set largely at a school for deaf students, also drew inspiration for the episode from the Deaf President Now movement at Gallaudet University in 1988, considered a watershed moment in the history of the Deaf population in the United States. -A.D.
