1981: Cronkie bids farewell
Having announced his retirement a year earlier, legendary TV newsman Walter Cronkite signed off his final broadcast as the anchor of CBS Evening News. Often deemed “the most trusted man in America,” Cronkite had helmed the anchor desk since 1962, and had served CBS’s news department in other capacities since 1950. He remained active as a special correspondent for CBS and other networks well into the 2000s. -A.D.
