2008: Hulu opens to the public

In the late 2000s, online streaming of television programs began to take hold with audiences. Hulu, one of the vanguards in the movement, launched its public web operation on this date to present current and older TV (along with movies, sports, and other content) to U.S.-based viewers. The service was widely seen as a concession by networks that they could no longer expect to control audiences’ access to their shows by restricting distribution to over-the-air broadcasting. Currently owned by a joint venture that includes many of the largest television content producers and distributors, Hulu was founded in 2007 by NBC Universal and News Corp. -A.D.
