1978: The Carol Burnett Show ends
The comedienne helmed this popular sketch and variety show for 11 seasons and 278 episodes on CBS. Winner of 25 Primetime Emmys, The Carol Burnett Show boasted a celebrated roster of comic talents, including Burnett herself, Tim Conway, Harvey Korman, Vicky Lawrence, and Lyle Waggoner. In the early ’70s it was a component of CBS’s renowned Saturday night line-up that included The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Bob Newhart Show, and All in the Family. In 1983 it even spawned a spin-off, Mama’s Family, a sitcom centered on a character Lawrence created. -A.D.
