1957: Ricky sings

Ricky Nelson’s rock ‘n’ roll career, and his road to teen idol status, was spurred by his first musical performance on TV on this date. The teenage co-star of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet performed a rendition of Fats Domino’s “I’m Walking” in the episode “Ricky, the Drummer.” Shortly thereafter, the cover was released as a single, eventually reaching #4 on the Billboard charts. Nelson recorded several more hits in the late 1950s and went on to mixed success as a singer-songwriter and actor in ensuing years. -A.D.
