1986: Sábado Gigante arrives in the States
The longest-running variety show in the world, Sábado Giante (or “Giant Saturday”) came to Univision on this date, where it become the Spanish-language channel’s longest tenured show. The blend of sketch comedy, musical acts, contests, interviews, and more began in 1962 in Santiago, Chile. In 1986 it shifted to Miami, where Univision has produced the program since. Broadcasting every Saturday night, it currently airs throughout North America and Latin America as well as in parts of Europe.. -A.D.
