1982: The Lawrence Welk Show concludes
Big band leader Lawrence Welk hosted his eponymous program for more than 30 years, beginning in 1951 on local Los Angeles station KTLA. In 1955, it commenced 16 years of national broadcasts on ABC before moving to first run syndication from 1971–82. The musical variety show featured guest performers and Welk’s own band performing in a variety of styles, from contemporary pop and country to 20th century standards and even religious music. -A.D.
