2005: YouTube gets its first video
The popular video streaming site launched the prior February, but the first video was uploaded on this date. Titled “Me at the zoo,” the 19-second clip featured YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim at the San Diego Zoo. The site grew rapidly from these humble beginnings, becoming the Internet’s most popular source for sharing videos—including clips and entire episodes of some TV programs, sometimes with legal permission and sometimes not. Today, the Google-owned site has distribution agreements with a number of major media companies and has become a home for user-created original web series. -A.D.
