1992: ABC concludes a few favorites

A pair of once highly rated sitcoms were abruptly ended by then-last-place ABC on this Saturday night. Growing Pains, the family sitcom starring Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns, and Kirk Cameron, concluded after seven seasons and 166 episodes. Who’s The Boss?, a Tony Danza vehicle also starring Judith Light, Alyssa Milano, and Emmy-winner Katherine Helmond, wrapped up an eight-season, 196-episode run. Both struggling sitcoms bowed out with hour-long finales several weeks before the end of the 1991–92 season.

Also airing its series finale—though not its final new episode—was the lighthearted action series MacGyver, which for most of its run was a Monday night offering. The show, which followed Richard Dean Anderson’s resourceful hero through various scrapes, had not aired an episode of its abbreviated seventh season since December 1991 before “The Stringer” aired on this night. A month later, “The Mountain of Youth,” a previously unaired episode which was intended to precede “The Stringer” became the final new hour of MacGyver-A.D.
