1998: Sex and the City debuts

Based on the writing of columnist Candace Bushnell, the HBO comedy centered on four successful single women in turn-of-the-millennium Manhattan. Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis, and Cynthia Nixon portrayed the quartet, whose archetypal personalities and bracingly frank discussions of sex, romance, friendship, career life, and more both tapped into and helped shape the pop culture zeitgeist. The series took home seven Emmys, including one for Outstandign Comedy Series in 2001. Sex and the City ran six seasons and 94 episodes, subsequently spawning two theatrical movies and one loose prequel series, The Carrie Diaries-A.D.

Today’s Birthdays: Sandra Bernhard, comic (58); Max Casella, best friend (46); Harvey Fierstein, character actor (61); Staci Keanan, daddies’ girl (38); Josie Lawrence, improviser (54); Danny Strong, nerd (39).
